Eroding or Refining? Navigating Toxic Environments & Why Getting Fired Is A Compliment
May 26, 2026
SHOW NOTES:
How do you know whether a difficult environment is helping you grow or slowly eroding you?
In this episode of The Prodigal Journey, Ben and Dawn have an honest conversation about toxic environments, unhealthy leadership, workplace dysfunction, boundaries, faith, and the difficult question of when to stay and when to leave. The conversation grew out of Ben’s experience navigating a toxic work environment and the months it took to process what happened. Rather than focusing on one particular person or situation, they intentionally look at patterns that can help people recognize unhealthy environments for themselves.
One of the central ideas of the episode is the difference between something being hard and something being harmful. Not every difficult situation is toxic, and not every season of pressure is something we should escape. But an environment can become toxic when patterns begin to slowly erode a person’s clarity, dignity, health, identity, and ability to thrive.
Ben and Dawn walk through several patterns that can signal a toxic environment, including control-based leadership, fear, inconsistent expectations, neglect of basic needs, manipulation, favoritism, lack of transparency, lack of accountability, retaliation, and leadership that refuses honest feedback.
At its heart, this is a conversation about discernment, growth, faith, leadership, and learning to recognize the difference between something that is refining you and something that is eroding you.
TAKEAWAYS:
- A difficult environment isn’t automatically a toxic environment.
- Hard seasons can produce growth, but harmful patterns can slowly erode a person’s health and well-being.
- Toxicity is better identified through patterns of behavior than isolated incidents.
- Dysfunction can become normalized when someone has been in an unhealthy environment for a long time.
- Toxic environments can involve control, fear, inconsistent expectations, neglect of basic needs, manipulation, favoritism, and lack of accountability.
- A healthy environment allows concerns to be raised and addressed rather than punished, ignored, or redirected.
- Healthy leaders should be willing to receive difficult feedback from people around them.
- Surrounding yourself with people who always agree with you can prevent growth and create unhealthy leadership.
- Retaliation or punishment for raising legitimate concerns can be a significant warning sign.
- Growth in an organization does not necessarily mean the organization is healthy.
- Financial success and numerical growth are not the same thing as healthy growth.
- People may remain in toxic environments because of financial pressure, fear, loyalty, identity, hope, or faith-based convictions.
- Faithfulness should not automatically be equated with remaining in a harmful environment.
- Jesus’ faithful suffering on the cross was a specific and purposeful calling, not a universal command to remain in every harmful situation.
- A person may need outside, objective support to evaluate what is happening.
- Documenting patterns can help people maintain clarity when an environment causes them to question their own experience.
- Healthy boundaries are appropriate, and how an environment responds to those boundaries can reveal a great deal.
- Your identity does not have to be tied to your job, organization, church, or position.
- Leaving an unhealthy environment is not necessarily failure; sometimes it can be an act of obedience and faith.
- Leaders have a responsibility to examine what behaviors they create, allow, model, and tolerate.
- Healthy leadership requires humility, accountability, feedback, and a willingness to change.
- Ultimately, the question is not simply “Should I stay or should I go?” but “Is this environment eroding me or refining me?”
